Students at Western Australia’s Quinns Rocks Primary School are finding ‘maths success’ since the introduction of ORIGO Education resources at their school.
Teacher Nigel Rogan, who is a proponent of ORIGO Education resources, noted the overall maths outcomes of students, as well as their NAPLAN results, were now “excellent”.
“Using ORIGO Education’s resources has completely reinvigorated the teaching of maths,” said Nigel.
“The students are engaged and love the interaction with technology.
“Our students say they enjoy maths lessons, which I couldn’t honestly say I did as a child.
“It has definitely improved our maths results and we now have a clear understanding of what was taught from each year level. Teachers speak the same language, and the students now use the same math language from year to year.
“ORIGO has opened my eyes up to how powerful conversations about concepts are and how having a class discussion is more important than completing a maths page.”
Quinns Rocks Primary School, north of Perth, adopted ORIGO Education’s approach and resources to ensure consistency while providing flexibility.
“We were initially looking for a whole school program, as we found what we were doing was ad hoc from year to year and we had no consistency across the school,” Nigel said.
“ORIGO is easy to follow. It covers all the curriculum and more. It also differentiates learning for those that need it.
“I know what has previously been taught and I can go back to a lesson from the year before to remind students.
“I’m not spending hours trying to find activities for a maths lesson and then spending more hours for remediation and extension as they are all in ORIGO.”
Nigel said his students’ maths success demonstrates the benefits of ORIGO Education even beyond the program.
“I have used a lot of programs in different areas and usually find the students achieve within the program but do not transfer to everyday situations,” said Nigel, who pursued teaching after working with teenagers in an Australian Army Cadet Unit.
“ORIGO is different – the program is written so students see concepts in many situations which helps when transferring to situations outside the program.
“We often get comments from our feeder high school that the students coming from Quinns Rocks Primary School have a real grasp of the math concepts covered in primary school.”
Nigel highly recommends ORIGO Education’s resources to other teachers.
“I couldn’t speak more highly of the ORIGO program,” Nigel said.
“I like it as it’s not about the book; it’s about the teaching and ORIGO guides you through the teaching.”
