Language and Literacy in Mathematics
10 Week Professional Learning Program
Partner with our expert team to implement a 10-week self-paced full school professional learning program
Challenging the way teachers view mathematics happens slowly over time (Muis, 2004). It is not some magical bean ingested in a one off PowerPoint presentation. Change is more likely to occur when teachers reflect on their practice, talk to other teachers about teaching, engage with experts in the field, and revisit their thinking over time (Hattie, 2009). If you are after something different, and want to break the mould of more traditional professional learning options, then this coaching opportunity is for you.

Course Overview
20-minute chat with ORIGO Education Senior Author and Writing Manager, Peter Stowasser and your nominated school facilitator.
Walk through of content and goals for first two workshops.
Held via zoom.
Connecting literacy, numeracy, critical, and creative thinking.
3-5 minute pre-recorded video hosted by Peter Stowasser discussing the topic and providing key direction.
Tasks to follow:
Task 1
Teacher’s break out into small groups to analyse curriculum documents for the following general capabilities: Literacy, Numeracy, and Critical and Creative Thinking.
Key Questions
- What themes emerge as you read about the general capabilities?
- What “dispositions” or “behaviours” appear valued?
Task 2
Three-Ring Venn Diagram. Facilitator writes ideas on post-it notes and the teacher’s attach to the appropriate part of the venn-diagram.
Key Questions
- What are the relationships among the general capabilities? How do they complement one another? What are the opportunities for overlap?
Introducing a model to develop mathematical concepts.
3-5 minute pre-recorded video hosted by Peter Stowasser discussing the topic and providing key direction.
Tasks to follow:
Task 1
Teacher’s break out into small groups. Facilitator assigns a mathematical concept (e.g., subtraction) to each group. Teachers then work together to identify the everyday language students bring to the classroom and then how this language is developed.
Key Questions
- What is the everyday language students bring to the classroom?
- How is this language developed to deepen understanding?
20-minute chat with ORIGO Education Senior Author and Writing Manager, Peter Stowasser and your nominated school facilitator.
Walk through of content and goals for final two workshops.
Held via zoom.
Raising the bar and incorporating critical and creative thinking in practice.
3-5 minute pre-recorded video hosted by Peter Stowasser discussing the topic and providing key direction.
Tasks to follow:
Task 1
Teachers are given example texts to “mathematise” and then share with the group. Critical and creative thinking is encouraged.
Key Questions
- How can you “mathematise” everyday texts to increase engagement and encourage critical and creative thinking?
Exploring how numeracy, literacy, and critical thinking can be developed.
3-5 minute pre-recorded video hosted by Peter Stowasser discussing the topic and providing key direction.
Tasks to follow:
Task 1
Teacher break into year level groups. They analyse the content descriptors for their year level and describe how numeracy, literacy and critical and creative thinking can be developed.
Key Questions
- What content descriptors lend themselves to more than one general capability?
- How can you “raise the bar” to incorporate critical and creative thinking?
- What are the implications for assessment? How can this type of planning help to identify students working beyond the grade level standard?
20-minute chat with ORIGO Education Senior Author and Writing Manager, Peter Stowasser and your nominated school facilitator.
Feedback opportunity and discussion of next steps.
Held via zoom.
