Overview of the session:
We now know that the human mind learns by connecting new ideas to existing ideas. Therefore, to help students learn new concepts and skills, it makes sense to utilise visual models that they experienced in previous grades. In this session, participants will discover how versatile representations such as number lines, dot arrays, and area models can be used to teach major concepts involving whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and even skills such as rounding and finding equivalent fractions. This workshop will address mathematical standards from Year F to 6 and is suitable for anyone interested in teaching mathematics with conceptual understanding.
