Teaching Basic Number Facts with Understanding – Not Gimmicks!
Part 1: Addition and Subtraction
- Hosted by James Burnett
How often do you see students add basic facts by counting on their fingers? Oddly, we discourage young children from using their fingers to add, but as they enter Year 3, we teach them to use their fingers to skip count the fives facts and then teach them “tricks” using their fingers to multiply by 9! In short, methods such as these are inefficient and make little sense to students.
Basic number facts must be taught with understanding using strategies that can be extended to greater numbers. This two-part webinar will utilise powerful visual representations and games that help students to master the basic facts for all four operations – with understanding!
This webinar included a handout with can be accessed HERE.
This webinar will run for approximately 45 minutes.
